Oath of the Horatii - Jacques-Louis David
Focus: the man in the foreground on the left
He’s in a large L’Homme qui marche (lots of distance between the feet) facing away from our view. While his right arm is straight (fingers slightly separated) and his head is turned to the right—creating a very two-dimensional design—the angles of his hips and arms keep him in three dimensions. The torso is more or less in line with the hips. My favorite part about this person’s stance is the way his left hand (fingers slightly parted) holds the spear. He holds it behind his person, hand above the thigh, the spear tilted at maybe a 25° angle away from him, with the back end touching the ground near his left foot.
