Statue of Liberty
The right arm is fully extended straight up, the hand grasping a torch. The left hand holds a tablet (tabula ansata, a tablet evoking the law, with the date of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence written on it). The thumb is behind the tablet, the other fingers curled around. The body is straightened and robed. Notice how letting the right sleeve come down and bare the arm amplifies the statue’s revolutionary message. While the tablet-holding arm guards, the torch-bearing arm says, courageously, “on!”
